Brown Arequipa Pottery Vase sells for $2,247

Arequipa Pottery in Marin County California was open only 7 years, 1911-1918. The first three years were under the tutelage of the famous potter, Fredrick Rhead, of Rhead Pottery Santa Barbara, the creator of Fiesta Ware. This piece dates from the post-Fredrick Rhead period, the second production period under the direction of Alfred Salon, c. 1913-1915. The vase is hand-thrown and the floral decoration is hand-carved on the piece. The glaze is a speckled, egg-shell brown and tan. On the bottom you can see that the material the vase is made from is local, red, California clay. The bottom is impressed Arequipa California, with the Arequipa oak tree and vase logo, marked #635, 16, and the artist’s initials GL and measures 4.25 inches high, 6 inches wide.

This vase sold for $2,247 in January 2010.

Arequipa Pottery - Squeeze Bag Pattern

Arequipa Pottery was produced from 1911 to 1918 by the patients at the Arequipa Sanatorium in Marin County, just north of San Francisco. The patients were trained by Frederick Hurten Rhead, formerly with Roseville Pottery.

This 7.5″ tall vase, pattern #2118 is estimated to be worth $4000-5000 depending on condition.

Arequipa Iris Blossom Pattern

This beautiful teapot has the AREQUIPA mark and MODEL 964/16. The design is carved Iris blossoms and leaves. It measures 3 7/8″ tall and 5″ WIDE, (not including spout and handle).
