Mary and Edwin Scheier Bowl sells for $2,125

Monday, June 15th, 2009

The ceramic arts pottery movement is another area of collectible pottery that I have begun exploring.

The Scheier’s are they epitome of modern craftsman. Edwin Scheier (b.1910) and Mary Goldsmith (b.1909), met at Big Stone Gap Federal Art Gallery in Abingdon, Virginia, where Mary was the director. They married in 1937 and decided to become travelling puppeteers. In 1938 the Scheiers learned about ceramics while working with the Federal Art Project in Norris, Tennessee. They set up a pottery shop in Glade Spring, Virginia. Their art is shown in Currier Gallery of Art, The New York Museum of Modern Art, Boston Museum of Fine Arts and The Art Institute of Chicago.

This 8 ¼” X 6” bowl sold for $2,125 in June 2009.
