Teco Pottery Organic Patterns

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Teco (TErra COtta) Art Pottery was produced from 1899 - 1920 by the American Terra Cotta and Ceramics Company, located in Terra Cotta, Illinois. W. D. Gates, a lawyer, founded the company to produce architectural terra cotta used in constructing fire-proof buildings after the Chicago Fire of 1871.  During slower work periods, Teco began producing Art Pottery, becoming famous for their innovative modern designs. There are ~ 500 Teco shapes, whose forms can be categorized as architectural, organic or classical. Gates designed about half the shapes, other designers were Fritz Albert, William Mundie, Fernand Moreau and Frank Lloyd Wright.

I will try to post as many patterns as possible.  Check back later for more.

Wheatley Mark2

Example: Ruskin Pottery - William Howson Taylor

Friday, May 8th, 2009

In 1898, William Howson Taylor’s father, Edward Richard Taylor, the Principal at the Birmingham School of Art, founded The Ruskin Pottery, named after the artist & philosopher John Ruskin. William Howson Taylor took over Ruskin in 1912.The company experimented and created unique and beautiful glazes. The formulas were kept secret, and when William Howson Taylor died in 1935, the formulas were lost forever.

This 17″ vase dates from ~1898 and sold for $800 on ebay in 04/2009:

Van Briggle Bat Vase sold on ebay for $2700

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

I’ve been looking for a Van Briggle Bat Vase for years … and then a 1916 mulberry version finally came up for auction on ebay.  In case you are wondering  - I didn’t win :(

The 11″ vase sold for $2700 after 14 bids.  $2700 is a fair price, which just goes to show that a rare piece of pottery will almost always fetch a good price  … even in a recession.  I included the 1916 VanBriggle Mark.

Weller hired French potter Jacque Sicard to create a line of pottery that could compete with Tiffany.  Jacque Sicard created an iridescent pottery titled ” SICARDO” between the years 1903 -1905. He then returned to France & his secret was nerver revealed.

His signature looks like this:
