Pottery Mark: NONCONNAH

Walter B. Stephen (1876 - 1961) traveled west in a covered wagon as a young boy. He lived in a sod home near the Sioux Indians, NE where her met Wild Bill Cody. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, Stephen and his mother began Nonconnah, near Memphis, TN in ~1904. Stephen operated a second Nonconnah pottery in NC before establishing Pisgah Forest Pottery in 1926. His pieces can easily fetch 5 figures.

Pottery Mark: Walwrath Pottery

Frederick Walrath was born in 1871.

He studied art at the NY State School of Ceramics in Alfred, NY.  He worked at Greuby Faience in Boston.  He taught at the Mechanics Institute from 1908-1918.  He participated in the Art League of Rochester, and later worked at Newcomb Pottery in New Orleans, LA.   He died in 1920.

His pieces are marked Walrath Pottery” with a mark that looks like a cross in a circle between the two words.

Because they are scarce, you will lucky to find a Walwrath at a bargain price. But check the flea markets and thrift shops …
