Maria Montoya Martinez bowl sells for $2000
This blackware bowl/pot of San Ildefonso Pueblo Indian Pottery by Maria Antonia Montoya Martinez and her son Popovi Da (aka Poveka) is dated May 1960. It sold for $2,000 in September 2009. The bowl features her famous matte and highly polished finishes with her renowned feather motif interspersed with two birds and two kiva steps. Pot is app. 5.5″ tall and app. 7″ at its widest. The opening is 3.75″ and the base is 3″.
Maria Montoya Martinez (1881 – 1980) was a Native American artist who created internationally known pottery. Maria was born Maria Antonia Montoya and used various forms and derivatives of her name throughout her career. Initially, she and her husband Julian worked together and created their distinctive techniques and styles, based on Pueblo pottery and designs. This pot is from the period when she was creating works with her son Popovi Da (Poveka). She is one of the most famous potters of the San Ildefonso Pueblo community near Santa Fe, New Mexico, an area renowned from the quality and artistry of its pottery.
