Harold was a friend of mine. Lucky me, I have 13 of his charming paintings. Some are the familiar subjects and others are different - carnivals, barn dances, winter scenes, holiday dinners…scenes from his rural childhood mind’s eye. My little girl said that he “did nice cows”. Over the years I had the good fortune to hear him spinning stories about his pictures ( I don’t remember that he ever called them paintings) as I bought his most recent works from him at Toledo area outdoor art shows. He had a following. Both he and his work were very popular, a really good-natured little old guy with a twinkle in his eye. His paintings always sold out early! His wife was with him and she managed the money. He claimed that when he retired he intended to learn woodworking but his wife wouldn’t let him because the sawdust was too messy.. So he took up painting but couldn’t resist making his wood frames just for a bit of fun. He sat in an easy chair pencilling in his pictures and painting his childhood memories on the board resting across his lap, solitary and content in his own world wearing a headset listening to classical music. Just remembering him here brings a smile as do his paintings that surround me.
