University City Pottery Marks
University City Pottery, of University, Missouri (1909 to 1915) produced many amazing pieces of pottery. Artists associated with the company include:
- British-born Frederick Hurten Rhead (1880-1942)
- Kathryn E. Cherry, an acclaimed teacher and designer of overglaze china decoration
- Taxile Doat
- Adelaide Alsop Robineau
- Emile Diffloth, a French ceramist who also assisted Doat
The University City Art Academy was a school within People’s University founded by Edward Gardner Lewis in 1909 to provide free correspondence courses for women who were members of an organization called the American Woman’s League. Lewis’s bankruptcy that spring forced the school to close and the faculty to depart.
