I am a former employee and artist that worked at Van Briggle in the mid 90's. You have my name wrong on your artist list, my name is Eric McCulley. It is my signature EM with the arrow pointing down from the M. You have my name as Eric McCulleu. I worked at the pottery for close to 4 years and worked side by side with Tina Ufford, Scott Ladzinski, Chris Scalia and Craig Stevenson. Just thought I would set the record straight.

Hi MaryLynn,

There are 4 companies that marked their pottery AVON.

Avon Ware (The Avon Art Pottery), Staffordshire, UK, founded 1930+ to present times

Avon Faience (Vance), Tiltonville, Ohio, USA, 1880-1908

Avon Faience Company, Wheeling, West Virginia, 1902-1903

Avon Pottery, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA, founded 1886-1888 (often just marked with the singular word 'Avon')

Based on the way you described your mark, I believe that it's Avon Faience (Vance), Tiltonville, Ohio, USA, 1880-1908 - and the WP stands for Wheeling Potteries Co.

I hope that helps.

I have a 3 piece coffee set that is white with green band around the middle. On the bottom they are marked Avon and a rectangle box underneath and the initials "WP" or "WR". The mark is in blue, but it is faded and I can't read much except the word Avon. The A is twice the size of the other letters. Could someone help me identify these?

Hi Rob,

I've never seen AVON pottery with a scrolly design around the mark. Generally AVON's (which is pretty rare since the company was only in business from 1886-1888) mark is all caps, with the A being about twice the size of the other letters.

Perhaps your plate was made by JFA Adderley Porcelain?

Hi,
I have a very old looking plate. The mark on the back is in a rectangular box with scrolly design around it; inside the box is the word AVON and just underneath are the initials J F. A lot of searching led me to possibly think is was AVON Pottery of Cincinnati, Ohio. Searching into history I found the name of Artis Van Briggle and Karl Langenbeck. On this website and in your posting is the first time I see any J F; noting an "artist mark" and then a finishing artist named Jared Finkenbinder. But his work date is more recent, 1980's, than this plate looks. In fact, this plate is approximately close to 40 years old which is all I can really remember as is was in my mother's possession the whole time and I am almost 44 years old myself. I'm trying to look into it more, but thought I would post and ask about it. It's the closest I've come to even possibly identify it. Is there any chance it could be before Jared by someone else or is there a place you may be able to suggest to look for more historic information about Van Briggle's company? Just thought I would ask. Thank you!
